Obituary: William Henry Crawford, Jr.
Our father and hero, William H. Crawford, Jr., son of the late Clara Ella Dibble and William Henry Crawford, originally of West Haven, Conn., then Branford, Conn., left this life in Newport on October 13.
He was born in 1919 and graduated from Mt. Herman School in Northfield, Mass., in 1937, then attended Randles School in Washington, DC, preparing for the United States Naval Academy entrance exam.
He entered the Naval Academy in July 1938, graduating early in December, 1941, due to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Jean Schumacher Crawford, formerly of Ansonia, Conn.; sisters Roberta Johnson of Madison, Conn., Ruth Doyle of Branford, Conn., and Carol Brown of Block Island, R.I.; sons William H. III (Lynn) of Pensacola, Fla., Stephen (Faye) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Peter (Kathy) of Hull, Mass., and Jeffrey (Marnie) of North Kingstown, R.I.; daughters Susan (David) Schaller of Block Island, Sarah (Bruce) Herritt of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Melissa (William) Carty of Portsmouth, R.I.; grandchildren Melissa Crawford, Michael (Karen) Crawford, Jennifer (Alec) Finlay; Stephanie, Brant, and Kiri Crawford; James (Rose) Schaller and Lisa (Chris) Robb; Molly Crawford; Haley and Kelsey Herritt; Carolyn, Clara, and Sam Crawford; and great-grandchildren, Grace and Alec Finlay II, Amelia and Cooper Crawford, Andrew Schaller and Macy Robb.
William will be laid to rest on his beloved Block Island. The family wishes to honor their father’s last request that, in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to either the Mary D. Fund, PO Box 323, or the Block Island Rescue Squad, PO Box 781, both located on Block Island, RI, 02807.
Mass of Christian burial and interment will be at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, at St. Andrew Church, Block Island.
