Order this... Pepperoni Bread at Aldo's

Food, fun and family — it’s all good at Aldo’s! Their bestselling appetizer, presented by members of the Leone/Papa family who have owned and managed the restaurant for three generations, is their Pepperoni Bread. Combine that with a Deep Eddy Ruby Red cocktail and you have a beautiful match.

Interspersed with a description of ingredients of the Pepperoni Bread from Christine Papa and Steve Jr., her brother, were wonderful family stories.

The appetizer ingredients are mozzarella and pepperoni and secret seasonings wrapped in fresh dough from Aldo’s Bakery, which is then baked and served warm with homemade tomato sauce. And, finally Christina disclosed the interesting ingredients of the cocktail, which had been awarded the best vodka drink on Block Island for the summer of 2015 by Deep Eddy Vodka. This refreshing drink is an interesting combination of muddled cucumbers, Block Island fresh mint and fresh limes mixed with Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka, agave, cranberry juice and water served over ice.

We sampled this delicious combination sitting in the building where Aldo Leone opened the restaurant in 1977 and where, after additions were made to the building, 25 members of the family once lived and cooked and ate together. Today, many family members still gather daily to operate the business and to share meals.

Anna Leone Papa and Christine, who is her daughter, oversee the restaurant and bar or “front of the house” and Steve, Anna’s husband and chief chef, and their son, Stephen, oversee the kitchen or “back of the house.“

Specials at Aldo’s include an “oldies from the 60s” band on Thursday and Friday nights — called Second Chance — and Mama Leone’s night on Thursday where the entrées come with free soup and salad. — Becky Ballard and Ruth Perfido

Aldo’s is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week from from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and is located on Weldon's Way.
