Order this... Seafood platter at The Narragansett
On a warm, sunny afternoon, we met on the restaurant porch of the Narragansett Inn overlooking the Great Salt Pond with Ross Draper, the manager of the inn, and Shane Blane, the executive chef, to sample Chef Blane’s offering of a seafood platter. Ross Draper is the current generation of the Abrams/Draper family, which opened The 1661 Inn in 1970 and who have provided the island with excellent food at many restaurants and the wonderful animal compound off of Spring Street. Chef Blane, who hails from Jamaica, has a 10-year history on Block Island and has always worked for the Drapers, both as a kitchen manager at The Oar and as a sous chef at the Hotel Manisses, which they formerly owned.
Chef Blane said he has developed a new menu this year, which has many selections, including jasmine rice bowls and avocado and beet salads that are house specialties. All the fish served is local and Captain Matt provides fresh fish for the daily special. The menu also highlights a number of interesting shared plates such as braised sirloin tips, ginger scallops and house made flat bread the winning, which are available both at dinner and on the lawn.
The seafood platter that we tasted was a combination of old and new — a whole lobster perfectly cooked with mussels, clams and delicious hush puppies made with lobster and clams, cheddar and jalapeno in a seasoned corn batter. It’s a winner!
Lawn service also includes full bar service, including craft cocktails such as the Bluecumber (fresh cucumber puree, fresh lime juice, Stoli blueberry vodka and a splash of soda), and music events on scheduled dates, the first of which scheduled events are July 9 and July 23 with music by Root Steady Reggae. And, whether from the restaurant porch or the lawn, on any evening just sitting back and watching the boats and activity in the Great Salt Pond from the Narragansett makes for a special night. — Ruth Perfido and Becky Ballard
Lawn service is available from 4 to 6 p.m. daily. Dinner is available daily from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and reservations are available by calling (401) 466-2626.
