Public Notice

During the past several years, the Building Department has received numerous complaints during the summer season concerning signage in our Commercial Zoning Districts and, in particular, in our Historic District.

The Town Council, working in conjunction with the Town’s Historic District Commission, has directed the Building Department to make the enforcement of the Town’s Sign Ordinance a priority this upcoming summer season.

First, a thank you to the many members of our business community who continue to comply with the Town’s codes and sign ordinance.

Please note that when the Building Department receives a sign complaint or observes a sign in violation of the ordinance, a Notice of Violation will be sent to the property owner requiring the unlawful or unapproved sign to be removed within ten (10) days. If more than one sign on a property is found to be in violation, each sign will receive a separate Notice of Violation and will be subject to separate fines. Under the Zoning Ordinance, the fine for violation of the sign ordinance is up to five hundred dollars ($500) for each violation. Each day the violation continues is deemed to be a separate and distinct violation.

The property owner may appeal the Notice of Violation to the Zoning Board but if the Notice of

Violation is upheld by the Board, the owner will be subject to a fine for each day the sign remained in violation.

The Town Council has directed the Town Solicitor to collect the fines as allowed by law.

I recommend that you take the time to review the Zoning Ordinance Section 504, Signs.  You can find the Zoning Ordinance on line at the Town’s website, (New-Shoreham.com), or stop by the Building Department and we will provide you with a copy.  As always, we are available to answer any questions you may have concerning the signage on your property.
