Report of downed windsurfer yields no results
The Block Island Harbors Department and Coast Guard were on scene last night, May 19, to search for a possible windsurfer who was reported to have hit the water without coming up, but a lengthy search yielded no results. Harbormaster Steve Land said he received a call about 7:20 p.m. of a downed windsurfer. He and another Harbors Department staffer began their search in the waters just below The Spring House off Spring Street.
The Coast Guard and members of the Block Island Police Department were also on the scene. Land said he searched from Old Harbor to Mansion Beach and found nothing in the water. The Coast Guard arrived on the scene later, and stayed longer, also without find anyone in the water.
Land said that so far this year his department has made two rescues and towed three boats, “so we’ve hit the ground running.” — Lars Trodson
