Roger Harwood, 68
Roger Harwood, 68, of Manchester, Conn., and Corn Neck Road, Block Island, died at home on Saturday, May, 20, surrounded by his loving family. Roger was born Sept. 29, 1948 in Norwich, Conn. to Dorothy (Hale) Harwood and Percival Harwood. He is survived by his wife, Janis (Belicka) Harwood, with whom he would have celebrated 44 years of marriage on June 2; his son Jonathan Harwood and wife Clarinda of Vernon, Conn.; daughter Meredith Olvera and husband Shawn of Manchester, Conn.; his five grandchildren, Jon and Nathan Harwood and Xavier, Shawn, and Cassira Olvera; and his sister, Catherine Harwood of Uncasville, Conn. Roger graduated from Norwich Free Academy and the University of Connecticut.
He had a long career in IT, most recently for Bank of America, until he retired last June. He was an avid sportsman, played golf and tennis, and loved to play cards with his friends. He was a longtime New York Yankees and Boston Bruins fan. Roger and Jan fell in love with Block Island when they made their first trip in 1976. After many summers of renting through Sullivan Real Estate, they were able to purchase a home on Corn Neck Road in 1993.
Many wonderful family vacations were spent on the island. Roger loved body surfing the waves at Mansion Beach. He also loved sailing his sailboat, the Guin, in Great Salt Pond.
A celebration of life and scattering of his ashes will be held later this summer on Block Island.
