On December 28, 2012, Romaine Olney Perry of Newport, R.I., passed away in Waltham, Mass., at the age of 94. She was born in Newport on November 19, 1918, to Rudolph and Mary Perry of Brooklyn, N.Y. Romaine was the only granddaughter of Aaron Church Perry Jr. She was raised by her grandfather and, upon his death, by her uncle and aunt, Emmet and Amanda (Church) Peters of Boston, Mass.

Known for being a bright woman with a sharp mind, Miss Perry attended a secretarial school in Boston after graduating from Rogers High School in Newport. She worked for the Massachusetts Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for nearly 50 years. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Mass.

She was the great-great granddaughter of several notable Native Americans of Block (Manisee) Island, including Isaac F. Church, Elizabeth (Olney) Church and John Perry.

She was an independent, solitary woman with a good strong mind until the end. She was determined and strong willed.

She had no children, but was loved and is survived by more than 18 beloved third cousins and many more fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh cousins. She will also be greatly missed by many friends, some from the Massachusetts DMV, St. Peters’ Episcopal Church, and Meadow Green Nursing home in Waltham.

Her funeral took place in Newport on January 3, 2013.
