Some helpers needed for tree lighting setup
John Cullen was in no mood to mince his words.
“It’s a pain in the ass,” he said. “It’s not fun.”
The unlikely subject of this particular piece of dialogue was the tree lighting ceremony that Cullen, as a member of the Tourism Board, sets up each year.
He said that getting others to help set up and take down the tree, which is lighted on the lawn of the Harbor Church, had just gotten harder and harder each year.
“There’s never anybody to help,” he said. “I’m not saying we’re not having a tree lighting. When the kids are there, and Santa’s there, it’s worth it.”
The tree is usually set up before Thanksgiving and is lighted in the beginning of December. This year the board set a tentative date of Dec. 3.
“Let’s look at a calendar and we’ll make a schedule,” said Tourism Director Jessica Willi. She suggested putting out a call for volunteers. “I’ll organize it all.”
“Santa needs some helpers,” said Board member Logan Mott Chase. “You need some elves.”
The next Tourism Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 11:15 a.m.
