Kicking off the summer season for artist-member shows at The Spring Street Gallery is a joint effort: "States of Being” will include paintings by Eileen Miller and ceramics and woodworking by John Warfel. A reception will be held on Saturday, June 22, from 5 to 7 p.m., marking the third year of Miller and Warfel's collaboration. The public is invited. The colorful mix of abstract expressionistic oil paintings and earthy, sculptural raku and pit-fired pottery are a dynamic pairing: two-dimensional with the three-dimensional, the abstract with the concrete.
Miller's paintings continue to explore new techniques and effects using both brush and knife work, mixing colors right on the canvas. Her work suggests states of mind. Her painting "Beyond" refers to an expanded perspective — one of the results of doing creative work. “It's a way to relax and explore a different mindset," said Miller. "Illumination" is another painting in which the movement in the brushstrokes and static white impasto overlap and encourage the viewer to look inside.
Warfel is continuing to work with the raku and pit-fired processes. He is experimenting more with textures and various burnishing techniques to enhance the effects of the reduction in the firing process. Gradually, Warfel’s pit-firings have been transitioning over to more brush and less sawdust as a fuel source, producing subtle changes in surface coloration. Warfel says that everything makes a difference. He sees his work changing as he ages and likens the process to erosion or weathering. Warfel is also including two coffee tables made from walnut slabs. He created table leg designs that he hopes enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
