Szabo steps down after 27 years at Chamber
Kathy Szabo, the longtime Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, will retire on Dec. 31, 2018 after 27 years on the job.
In a letter to members sent by the Chamber’s Executive Board President Diane Hayde, the Chamber also chose volunteer Cindy Lasser as Szabo’s successor. Lasser was the owner of the Island Bound bookstore for almost 20 years.
“In accordance with the Chamber by-laws and after careful consideration, the Chamber of Commerce Board has selected Cindy Lasser as the new Executive Director of the Block Island Chamber of Commerce. Cindy has worked at the Chamber office for the past two years and is familiar with current operations of the Chamber of Commerce. Cindy also brings an abundance of fresh ideas and more than two decades of on-island business experience to the Director’s position. Kathy has agreed to coordinate with Cindy for the remainder of 2018 to ensure continuity and a smooth transition,” Hayde wrote. “Finally, we wish to acknowledge the hard work and stewardship of Kathy Szabo. For more than 27 years, Kathy has been an integral part of our business community. Her energy and professionalism have built a framework for our future success. Thank you, Kathy!”
