Time to try electric bikes?

To the Editor,
I have been an annual visitor to the island for more than 35 years, and I have a recommendation about the current “moped” problem. First off, they are not mopeds, they are scooters, and more closely related to motorcycles; there have not been actual mopeds for rent since the 80s. This is part of the problem, these small gas-powered vehicles are loud and obnoxious, and they attract loud and obnoxious riders. The rental companies should switch from these dirty gas scooters to electric assist bicycles as soon as possible. Electric assist bikes still require some effort (but not much) and are easier to learn since they are more bicycle than motorcycle. They are also quiet,
emit zero fumes and use electricity generated by our own wind power. These bikes have been around for a few years now, and I do not understand why they have not been adopted by the rental companies yet. It could improve their business, and make the island a more peaceful place.
