Verizon service restored
UPDATED at 9 a.m. on July 31: Verizon said that its service has been restored on the island. It “was restored late last night,” said David Weissmann, a Public Relations Manager for Verizon. “It was restored before midnight, we worked with the fiber provider to get services back to normal.”
UPDATED at 3 p.m. on July 30: State Rep. Blake Filippi told The Times that Verizon informed him that they are hoping to resolve the issue related to its outage by later today. He also noted that the company said there is no guarantee regarding the timeline for resolution, and no details were provided by the company.
“Verizon was very responsive. They understand the issue. And I was assured they would get it fixed as soon as possible,” said Filippi, noting that he has had communication with Michele Cinquegrano, Regional Director for Verizon Government Affairs in Rhode Island.
UPDATED at 12:45 p.m. on July 30: With islanders expressing growing frustration, Verizon said that it has a crew on Block Island and they are working toward a resolution to bring cell service to Block Island. No deadline was given as to when Verizon’s wireless cellphone network would be up and running.
“We have a crew on the island today working toward resolution,” said Weissmann on Monday morning.
Social media postings show increasing frustration over the fact there there is no service, and because there has been no answer as to when the problem will be resolved.
Verizon’s wireless cellphone network has been out since Saturday with customers seeing the network vacillate between ‘No Service’ and occasionally brief moments of service. The outage has made it challenging for Verizon customers to make phone calls, send and receive texts, emails, and surf the internet, as well as conduct business on the island.
New Shoreham Town Manager Ed Roberge said he has been in contact with Verizon and was monitoring the situation. Roberge said there is a public phone available in the clerk’s office at Town Hall for Verizon customers. He noted that one of the bigger issues is having access to emergency services on the island.
Verizon customers can call Verizon customer service at: 800-922-0204 to get a $50 credit on their monthly bill. Customer service requires that customers who are calling with a complaint have their PIN number ready when speaking with a representative. Customers can go to the following web address for outage map information: https://downdetector.com/status/verizon/map/.
Weissmann issued the following statement to The Block Island Times on behalf of the company on Monday morning:
“We are currently experiencing a network issue impacting wireless service on the island as a result of an ongoing vendor fiber issue. Our engineers and technicians are aware and working with the fiber provider to resolve it quickly. Residents that need repairs should be calling into 800-verizon to report them. This allows issues to be appropriately tracked for further attention.”
