Dear Town Council Members:
We are co-owners and longtime residents of 561 Center Road, just down the hill from the airport, and one of our neighbors recently brought to our attention the Rhode Island Airport Corporation’s plans to offer developers the opportunity to build an industrial park on land they own surrounding Block Island Airport. My understanding is this is being done in violation of our local zoning laws.
How can this be allowed to happen?! It is a disaster not only for residents near the airport but given one of their parcel’s proximity to a popular hiking trail, their plans compromise the natural beauty of the area and will ultimately affect all Block Island residents and visitors for decades to come. What’s next, a Walmart?
My brother and I, as well as our neighbors residing near the airport, have already been forced to endure the insufferable and incessant noise of the recently established helicopter tour business at the airport and now we have to deal with this. It is yet another example, not unlike the island’s moped infestation, where the interests of a few wealthy business owners take precedence over tax-paying Block Islanders, affecting our property values and our quality of life. When is it going to stop?
There must be something the town of New Shoreham can do and we are curious to know what the town intends to do to fight it. Please let us know of your plans at your earliest convenience and what, if anything, we can do to help.
