Yellow crowned night-heron

Fred Nelson was looking out the window at his back yard on Beach Avenue and discovered a rare sight: a yellow crowned night-heron was taking a break on the lawn.

“The Field Guide to Birds of North America” describes the bird this way:

“Much less common than the black crowned night heron, and hunts at night, frequently also by day.”

“Watch for distinct black and white face on otherwise gray adult.”
