Obituary: Veronica Shepherd
Veronica Shepherd, 86, formerly a 45-year resident of Huntington, New York, and a 22-year resident of Vero Beach, Florida, died peacefully with her loving family at her side on May 10.
Veronica, who grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, was married to her teenage sweetheart Peter Samuel Shepherd, who died three weeks before her, after 65 years of blessed marriage.
In her earlier years, Veronica worked at the NY Telephone Company and later as a medical assistant for a Huntington dermatologist. Veronica devoted her life to her family,community and church, including a long-term participation in the St. Hugh Rosary Alter Society.
Veronica and her husband began vacationing on Block Island in 1976 and her son Dennis lives on the island for most of the year.
She embodied and lived by the ideals of integrity and goodness to others. Her children recall how “she always saw the best in everybody.” She is survived by her five loving children, Dennis, Peter, Gerard and Timothy Shepherd, and Laurie Johnson Miele; and her devoted daughters-in-law Janice, Margie, Vicki and Marie. Her 13 proud grandchildren and five great-grandchildren helped to companion her through her last months and reveled in her Irish wit and the lessons of life she exemplified. Her legacy of living a responsible life and caring for others will remain with her family forever.
Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, May 13, at St. Hugh of Lincoln RC Church, Huntington Station, NY. Charitable donations can be directed to St. Hugh Project Hope.
