Services for Merrill Slate at 1:30 pm today.
Merrill Eugene Slate, 87, lifelong resident of Block Island, died on August 20th after a short illness. He lived his entire life on the island, leaving for three years only to serve in his beloved Coast Guard during WW II in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters. He is predeceased by his wife Virginia, and his sister Claire Pike. He had no children but is survived by three nephews, Les Slate, Norris and Fred Pike. Merrill died just a few houses away from where he was born at Bridgegate Square which was his wish. He didn't travel far beyond in 87 years. He considered his wife's obituary a few years ago also his and requested a private graveside funeral, no party, no fanfare and no memorial service which was the way they lived their life.
A graveside service for Merrill Slate will be held at 1:30 today, Tuesday, August 21. at The Island Cemetery. At his request it will be short and simple but all are free to attend.
