Catherine Ann Riker  (1931-2012)

Tue, 10/02/2012 - 1:55pm

Catherine (Cathy) Ann Riker passed away September 8, after a brave battle against an illness in the hospital next to her home in Royal Palm, Florida. She was 81.

She was born Catherine Ann Coronesi, May 23, 1931 in Long Island, New York. There, she met the love of her life and husband of 61 years, Paul S. Riker. After their marriage in 1951, the two eventually moved to Block Island in 1972, where they lived happily until 1997.

Cathy always considered Block Island her true home, and she touched many people here with her amazing spirit and warm heart.

She will be remembered most for her commitment to her job as a dispatcher for the Block Island public safety; her presence at, and love for, the Catholic church; those beautiful sparkling almond-shaped eyes; her smile that could set the world at ease; and those individualized birthday and greeting cards that made you feel as though you were the only person that Cathy was thinking of (and during that time you were).

Cathy leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Paul; her five children, Paul Riker of New York, Patricia Swim of Connecticut, Janice Rutan of Florida, Norman Riker of Connecticut and Gerry Riker of Block Island. She also leaves her grandchildren: Todd Swim, Pete Swim, Merrill Swim, Katie Riker, Paula Riker, Scotty Rutan, Isabelle Riker, Sofia Riker and Scarlett Riker; and her siblings, Doctor Anthony Penisi, Mary Blackwell and Alford Coronesi.

There will be a celebration of Cathy’s life at the Saint Andrew Summer Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2. This will be immediately followed by a reception held at Aldo’s Restaurant on Chapel Street. The Riker family would love to see all those touched by Cathy’s love.
