Zana Margaret Littlefield, 98

Fri, 06/10/2016 - 7:00am

Zana Margaret (Hasty) Littlefield died at Portsmouth Hospital on June 1, 2016, aged 98 years, after a serious fall. She was surrounded by her children and her pastor, singing hymns.

Zana was born during a nor’easter on Jan. 12, 1918 to Clarence Milton and Ethel May (Young) Hasty. Active in 4-H, she grew up in South Berwick, Maine, graduating from Berwick Academy in 1935.

Zana toured Europe with author Gladys Hasty Carroll’s family, then entered Westbrook Junior College (now University of New England) for a year before marrying Howard Ransom Littlefield on Sept. 6, 1937.

Zana is quoted, “Family is the focus of my life.” The Littlefields raised their four children in the house Howard built on Bessbill Street in Ogunquit, Maine. Zana became a Boy Scout leader, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, Deaconess, and served on various fund-raising campaigns at church. Meanwhile she became well-known as a baker, first for Jenny Boston’s Farm Stand and the Mavels’ store, then at the Barbara Dean and Whistling Oyster. Zana was still baking for her family less than a month before death.

In later years, Zana was a caregiver for many, including two great-aunts; both her mother (13 years) and mother-in-law; and her husband for six years.

Her other interests included traveling (to Florida, Canada, Mexico, England and Italy); reading, and playing games — still beating her family at cribbage in the last week of her life!

Zana was predeceased by Howard, her husband of 64 years, and two of their sons: Robert Ransom and Howard Christopher. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Shirley Wagenseil of Fort Myers, Florida, and Block Island, R.I.; son Gary and his wife Grace of Wells, Maine; grandchildren Eric Littlefield of Ogunquit; Ian Kopsick and wife Sheila (Morton) of Cranston, R.I.; Wendi (Kopsick) Fogarty and husband Todd of Manhattan; and Lori Kopsick of Ocean Grove, N.J.; great-grandchildren Nicolas, Benjamin and Julia Kopsick and Bridget and Phoebe Fogarty; and Zana’s sister, Carolyn Bragdon of Wells; plus many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Ogunquit Baptist Church, 157 Shore Road, Ogunquit at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2016, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be in the family plot in Ocean View Cemetery in Wells on Monday, June 20.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ogunquit Baptist Church for missions programs.
