Deniece Champlin, 72
Deniece Champlin, 72, died April 20, 2017 at William W. Backus Hospital after a short illness. Deniece was born on Sept. 24, 1944 in Detroit, Mich., and was the oldest of seven children. Deniece grew up on Block Island, where she met her husband, David, who survives her. The couple moved to Connecticut in 1961 and they have been married for 55 years. Deniece graduated from the Licensed Practical Nurse program at Norwich Regional Vocational Technical School in 1972 and worked as an LPN at several institutions, including William W. Backus Hospital. Her family will remember her feisty wit, her incredible fish chowder, and her unbeatable Scrabble strategy.
In addition to her husband, Deniece is survived by her children, Karen King (Christopher) of Ledyard, Conn., Carla Champlin, of Preston, Conn., and Russell Champlin (Johanna), of Boston, Mass.; her grandchildren, Steven Gocka (Chelsea) of Norwich, Conn., Melanie Cometa (Anthony), Kevin Wade and Amanda King, all of Ledyard; and Rivers and Azure Champlin, of Boston, Mass.; and her beloved Chihuahua, Doodle.
In accordance to Deniece’s wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Deniece’s name to the Poquetanuck Fire Department, Inc., 87 Route 2A, Preston, Conn. 06365.
