Helen Sanchez, 99
Helen Reiss Sanchez, a true lady of grace and integrity, peacefully passed at age 99 years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday, June 27.
She grew up in Jamestown, R.I., and then summered in her married years on Block Island, R.I. — from 1943 to 1998 — with her beloved husband, Edward O. Sanchez. Their two children, Lynn and Smitty, cherished their summer months on the island with their parents, sharing beaching, fishing, berry picking, garnet hunting, boating and sailing. Many oil and water color paintings of the island landscape were captured by her, using her Swain School of Design of New Bedford training.
Helen was adored by many, especially her grandchildren, Erica Meyers, Melissa O’Reilly and Ed (Tad) Sanchez (deceased), and her godson, Richie Golden. She was proud to be an active board member of the Block Island Historical Society. Donations graciously may be given to the Block Island Historical Society, Box 79, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
A private graveside service will be held on the island at a later date.
