Getting it right
It was getting a bit tense.
The Town Council was scheduling special meetings, sometimes during the day, to continue the discussion on the new Town Manager’s contract. The five members emerged on Wednesday, Nov. 9, with the good news: Contract negotiations had come to an end, and Edward Roberge was hired as Block Island’s fourth full-time Town Manager.
The news came as a relief, not only because Block Island needed to fill that position, but people around town began to wonder what would happen if negotiations fell through. The island would have felt a little unmoored, no doubt.
There is no need to worry about that now. Roberge said he expects to start sometime after the first of the year.
That means Interim Town Manager Shirlyne Gobern will be on the job for another couple of months, but it is not too early to thank her for the service she has given to the town for the past nine months. It has been a tenure stretched longer than many had expected, but she has represented the town with exceptional fortitude and good grace, and we thank her for that.
