Richard O. Mazzur Jr., of North Kingstown, R.I. and Blue Hill, Maine, died at Newport Hospital on Tuesday, May 8, after a long illness. He was 79.

Mr. Mazzur was born in Rahway, N.J. in 1938, the son of Sallie (Delano) Mazzur and Richard O. Mazzur. He attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, N.J. before joining the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Service in 1957. He served four years on fleet boats and on the experimental sub, the Albacore. He loved boats all his life, especially his sloop Avatar, which he sailed every summer on Narragansett Bay.

He also loved the coast of Maine and spent the last 10 years summering in the quiet seaside town of Blue Hill. His workshop in Maine was filled with award-winning, made-from-scratch, boat models. When not in his workshop, Mr. Mazzur volunteered for Maine Hospice.

Mr. Mazzur was the former owner of R&R Tool in Fall River, Mass. and R.O. Mazzur Tool and Die in Quonset Point, R.I. Previously, he worked for a variety of tool and die businesses in New Jersey and Rhode Island, including Brown & Sharpe.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Elaine (Logan) MacLean of North Kingstown, a sister, Suzanne D. Cotter of Jefferson, Mass., and a brother, André D. Mazzur of Harwich, Mass.; as well as by his first wife, Marceline (Conley) Mazzur, and their three children: Richard O. Mazzur III of Bradford, R.I.; Tamzen A. Mazzur of Block Island, R.I.; Samantha A. Fontana of Vernon, Conn.; a stepson, Gavin H. MacLean of Providence, R.I.; and three grandchildren: Sallie Mazzur, Mettie Mazzur, Lilly Fontana; and one great grandson, Elliott Parkhurst.
