RISCA has announced that a new art exhibition is on display at the Block Island Airport Gallery. Works by Becci Davis will be on display through Jan. 24, 2019. The galleries present art to an ever-changing audience of local, national and international travelers.

Becci Davis’ Memory Map series convey specific narratives taken from her own life or the lives of others. The various works shown here either tell the story of her grandmother’s backyard and how it has changed over time, or tell the stories of notable women from Rhode Island’s history. Her process starts with creating a story based either from memory or research. She then constructs a collage of altered images, which may include old family photographs, found photographs, documents, and her own photography. She builds up layers of paint on a panel, transfers collage on top, then completes the work with another layer of painted elements.

Davis is an interdisciplinary artist. She works across media, collecting images, documents, and oral narratives. She combines this with her own interpretation and response, creating a new history and personal geography. Using collage, image transfer, and painting techniques, she constructs narratives of memory that merge time and space. Born in Fort Benning, Georgia, Davis finds inspiration in her encounters with nature and experiences as an American, daughter, mother, Southerner and woman of color. Davis earned her MFA from Lesley University. She was the recipient of the 2018 Providence Public Library Creative Fellowship and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Fellowship in New Genres and the St. Botolph Emerging Artist Award. She currently serves as the 2018 RISD Museum Artist Fellow. Davis resides in Wakefield.

Exhibitors for the Block Island Airport Gallery were chosen by Lisa Robb, public school arts educator. The Block Island Airport Galleries are funded through Rhode Island’s Percent for Art law.
