D. Chatowsky Art Gallery opens

Dave Chatowsky, an artist whose work has been seen around town for years — a mural at Aldo’s Restaurant, artwork on Jersey barriers down at Old Harbor and in The Block Island Times — has opened a new art gallery on Dodge Street.

The D. Chatowsky Art Gallery occupies the space in the new building located in the parking lot of the Red Bird liquor store on Dodge Street. This is the third gallery Chatowsky has opened, having opened one in Portsmouth, R.I. three years ago, and one in Newport last year.

The Block Island Gallery showcases eight artists (he represents 16 overall), including members of his own family.

The emphasis is on art that showcases the beauty of nature, such as photographer Elizabeth O’Connor, whose gorgeous infrared images grace the walls, or the marine botanical prints of his sister, Mary Chatowsky Jameson, or the Japanese-style fish prints created by his father, Anthony Chatowsky, who first came to Block Island to fish as a boy.

“He fished these waters for 70-plus years,” said Amy Chatowsky, David’s sister, who flew out from Reno on her summer break to help out with the gallery. “He’s always been an artist; that’s his lifelong passion.”

The elder Chatowsky is a retired psychiatrist and spends more time painting.

Chatowsky said he was particularly grateful to his sister for helping out at the Gallery.

Both Chatowskys said a “prevalent theme” of the art they showcase has been ecology, and to incorporate our love of the ocean, native themes, natural patterns.

The building itself, which Dave Chatowsky helped build, reflects that in its use of reclaimed lumber, including beautiful beams saved from a 19th century barn located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

“The Gallery is to promote the beauty of nature, an appreciation of that,” said Dave Chatowsky. “That’s been my whole life as an artist, the backbone of my work.”

The D. Chatowsky Art Gallery is open Monday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Closed Tuesday; Wednesday, 1 to 8 p.m.; Thursday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Beach break from 1 to 3:30 p.m.); and 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Instagram is DChatowsky Gallery. Phone is (401) 835-4623.
