With the community cheering, Lady ‘Canes finish second
Before a cheering community at the gym at Rhode Island College, and a packed room at the Yellow Kittens watching online, the Lady ‘Canes Varsity Volleyball team found themselves outgunned by St. Raphael’s Academy on Sunday, Nov. 17 for the state championship. The Lady ‘Canes, in just their second season, had displayed such a ferocious attitude on the court, coupled with their winning record, that they captured the heart of the Block Island community.
The Lady ‘Canes finished the regular season as the number one seed after defeating last year’s champions, Rogers High School, last week. In Sunday’s matchup, however, the Lady ‘Canes could not pull off a set. They finished 0-3 versus St. Ray’s at the gym at Rhode Island College.
That loss did not diminish the accomplishment that many felt the Lady ‘Canes had achieved during the first two years since the team was formed.
“They are incredible. An amazing season. There is nothing not to be proud of,” said Block Island School teacher Lisa Robb.
“I am so proud and impressed of the season that these young ladies have had. Second place in the state finals is a huge honor,” said teacher Stacey Henshaw. “Congratulations, Lady Hurricanes. They had such an amazing season.”
