Constance Halikas, 72, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s on March 8, 2020, in Toms River, N.J. She is survived by her daughter, Candy Halikas. Connie, as she was known, called Block Island her home for many years. She was born in New London, Conn., to Augustus and Lucy Halikas, with her grandmother Marianthe and Aunt Kiki rounding out the family.

Connie and her partner Mike Cavasino, or Mike-Mike as he was affectionately called, were fixtures in New Harbor during the 1970s and 80s. Their powerboat years were on the Happy Hooker, anchored off Payne’s Dock, and then their sailboat years were on the Stiletto, anchored off The Oar. In Old Harbor, you could often find them at Barone’s, their favorite dinner spot, having pasta at a back table. Connie worked for Doris Payne at the Taffy Tent, and later rented bikes and mopeds at the Boat Basin. During the shoulder season, Connie and Mike-Mike would move their boat to the Hog Pen.

After Mike died, Connie started to travel, living in Vermont and Kingston, Rhode Island. She returned to Block Island for some years, where she worked for Rita Draper at the 1661 Inn, and lived at the Eureka. She continued her travels to Austin, Texas where she met her best friend, Kd Dyer. Connie was a free spirit, not to be pinned down. From Austin, she and Kd went to Las Vegas, found her way back to Rhode Island, and then finally onto New Jersey. In New Jersey, Connie was a resident at The Chelsea of Toms River, where she had great nurses and met good friends.

Connie was famously known as a cat lover. Her love of cats started when Candy gave her Georgia, her first cat (named after her favorite artist, Georgia O'Keeffe). From then on, Connie always had cats (Bluebell, Isabella, Maxine, Lucy, Sam, Paolo, and Cleo). She loved them so much she referred to them as Candy’s siblings, much to Candy’s dismay.

Thank you to the island community for their support and love of Connie and her family. Donations in her name can be made to the Mary D. Fund.
