The summery, sumptuous food at Aldo’s

Fri, 08/07/2020 - 12:15pm

It’s a lovely summer day and you’ve been out on the island for a while. You’ve had seafood, you’ve had burgers and fried foods, and you’re longing for some great pizza and classic Italian food.

Aldo’s has every dish you’ve been craving, all made from scratch, and you can dine in, get it to-go, or have it delivered right to your door.

Anna and Steve Papa have been running the restaurant for 43 years, and their daughter Christina notes “we’re so experienced doing take-out that it was easy for us to adapt to Covid this spring.”

Their take-out business has doubled this year; Christina says that “you can see the menu online, call in your order and then have it delivered by Seapod, pick it up, or we’ll bring it out to your car if you don’t feel comfortable coming in.” And while there’s no flaming parmesan wheel this year, the diverse and extensive menu makes Aldo’s a perfect place to order pizzas, appetizers, sandwiches, salads and entrees for families and couples. If you want to dine in, there’s ample seating on the covered patio and porch, while movable plexiglass partitions make the bar area feel comfortable and safe for diners.

The portions at Aldo’s are abundant, and it’s apparent from the first taste that the sauces are homemade and simmered for hours — even days — on the stove. The intense tomato/onion/ garlic/spice from an old family recipe complemented our eggplant rollatini — served as an app or an entree, the sauce is draped over thin slices of eggplant rolled around pillowy ricotta cheese with delicious mozzarella melted on top. It’s a great starter that whets the appetite without filling you up.

My entree of creamy, cheesy penne was lightly bathed in an alfredo sauce and plenty of tender chicken and broccoli to include in every bite. We took a pause from the bigger plates to sample the Greek Salad, a great surprise from the kind I usually get at my local pizza place at home. No sad pieces of iceberg lettuce here — fresh dark green romaine lettuce accompanied by tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, pepperoncini and pitted kalamata olives tasted divine thanks to the summery homemade cucumber dressing that made the salad crisp and bright.

Palate cleansed, we moved on to a yummy eggplant parmesan. No thick slabs of eggplant to be found here — instead, the vegetable is sliced paper thin and piled high so you’re able to taste layers and layers of eggplant instead of being overpowered by the rest of the ingredients. Aldo’s homemade tomato sauce and just the right amount of cheese will make this a dish you remember and will re-order year after year.

We all enjoyed Aldo’s Special, which had a little something for everyone. The meat-eaters enjoyed the homemade sausage and meatballs, eggplant and peppers satisfied the vegetarians and we all loved the pasta, sauce and mozzarella cheese that makes this dish classic. We had a pizza to finish out our tasting, but not just any pizza. A crisp homemade crust was topped with white pizza sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese was heaped high with arugula and prosciutto, drizzled with a truffle balsamic glaze. The combination of the salty prosciutto with the sharp arugula, sweet glaze and creamy cheese was unexpectedly delightful and we appreciated the unique combination that elevates the pizza above the ordinary.

Take a break from cooking and treat yourself to a homemade meal from Aldo’s kitchen to yours.
