Mourning a friend
To the Editor:
There are so many reasons to mourn the passing of Steve Draper. In this short tribute, I will dwell on just one aspect of his life. Though a quiet person, he did much to help the town run smoothly, with his service and technical knowledge relating to infrastructure — and with his family’s hospitality business that blends so harmoniously with the community.
I wish I’d had him as a shipmate in the engine rooms of ships on which I served. Though merchant ships are big, they have tiny crews. On my last ship of 650 feet, we had just six in the engine gang to keep that thing running continuously around the clock 24/7 for months at a time.
Steve would have been such an asset: he had a multitude of skills and was a jack of all trades. He was able to work long hours alone, and was pleasant to be with. Those qualities are cherished in ships’ engine rooms — and in communities as well. He will be missed.
