Robert (Bobby) Fletcher, formerly of Block Island, died peacefully on June 7, 2022, in Sebastian, Florida, after a short illness. Bobby was born in New Haven, Conn., on July 6, 1951. He moved to Branford, Conn. with his family in 1962. His parents bought a summer home on Block Island soon after. He spent his years as a child in Branford and on Block Island. He worked as a fisherman and fish market employee as a young teen. After graduating high school at Branford, he moved to Block Island permanently with his family in 1970. Bobby was a carpenter with his father, Bob Fletcher, building and restoring historic and new homes on the island. He became an expert finish carpenter under the tutelage of his father, Bobby Rose, Norris Pike, and others. He was a true craftsman and an experienced designer. He looked for and valued fine workmanship and had a creator’s eye for fine art, which he and Robyne collected and enjoyed together in later years. Bobby did a short stint working for the union installing the town sewer system in the mid-seventies. After this he moved off-island to pursue college and continue homing his carpentry skills in Vermont and Connecticut.

Bobby was an avid fisherman who knew all the best spots to land big bass on the island, and his skill as a chef made delicious and impressive dining. He also loved golfing and was a member of the Block Island Lions. When not following tourists during the summer months, Bobby’s natural charisma and charm shone brightly. He loved nature, particularly the art of bird watching. Block island was a twitcher’s paradise and he frequently regaled his family with sightings he was sure were only seen on the island. He was also a very gifted artist and writer, commenting on his observations in a beautifully prosaic manner. He was a voracious reader and his knowledge about the natural world was extensive. Bobby valued a good joke at the worksite, a thriving tomato plant or head of lettuce in his garden, and a bird feeder full of songbirds on a crisp winter day.

He is predeceased by his parents, Robert Orin Fletcher, Sr. and Joan Ericson Fletcher. He is survived by his loving wife Robyne Fletcher, and children Orin and Rebekah Fletcher, stepchildren Seth Monahan of Guilford, Conn., and Cate Lagueux of Medford, Mass.; sisters Candace Allen of Erie, Colo., Belinda Maltz of Wakefield, R.I., and brothers Andrew Fletcher of Siloam Springs, Ariz., and Steven Fletcher of Austin, Texas. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Molly, Cecilia, Annette, Desmond, and Lucien. A memorial service is planned for October 1, 2022 at the Block Island Cemetery.
