Celebrating Block Island

To the Editor,
On behalf of the Double Ender Celebrations committee, we would like to say thank you to the community for supporting our 37th Independence Day parade. The theme for this year’s parade was “Celebrate Block Island.” We were happy to see participation from many island businesses and families who brought creativity and excitement to this year’s lineup.
First, a thank you to Interim Police Chief Chabot, the New Shoreham Police Department, and the many Community Service Officers for redirecting traffic, maintaining crowd control at various points on the parade route, and helping the committee organize and plan the logistics of lining up floats. Thank you to the Block Island Volunteer Fire Department for including two engines to kick off the parade. Additional thanks to Brad Marthens for escorting our Grand Marshal, Martha Ball, and to the Spirit of 76 and the American Legion Post 36 for their continued commitment to our parade festivities.
Further, the following taxi cabs, Diggers Cab, Kody’s Taxi, Green Diamond Taxi, Swell Taxi, and Tip Top Taxi, for their speedy service in bringing The Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard, The Taunton City Band, and Taggart Pipes and Drums to The Oar for line-up.
Many thanks to our volunteer judges Ruby Perry and Meg Vitacco who were generous with their time on an early Monday morning.
A final large thanks to all of our sponsors and donors from the community who contributed to the weekend’s celebrations. It’s your interest and support that makes our effort worthwhile. Our sponsors include the fireworks sponsor, Block Island Tourism Council, the barge co-sponsors Ballard Hall Sales Group, Beach Real Estate, Block Island Realty, Phillips Real Estate, Sullivan Sotheby’s International Real Estate, and Rosemary Tobin of Lila Delman Compass, and our parade sponsor Cross Sound Ferry. The unfortunate turn in weather for our fireworks show was a very Block Island delay but the Double Ender committee is looking forward to the rain date show on Saturday, September 3 during Labor Day weekend.
Thank you all for a successful event and we hope to see you at next year’s parade!
Double Ender
