To the Editor,
On Monday, July 11, the Block Island Lions Club held its 36th annual golf tournament at the Richmond Country Club. Players from the island, as well as many mainland golfers, joined together for a perfect day of golf.
All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund or educational enrichment programs for Block Island School students. Each year the Club awards one or two graduating seniors a scholarship and will continue for three additional years if the student is in good academic standing. The students who are currenting receiving scholarships are: Julia Butcher, Fiona Crawford, Moira O’Neill, Charlotte Hall, Stephanie Rich, Rory Crawford and Amira Veldman-Wilson.
The winning team with a score of 8-under consisted of: Scott Heinz, Chris Phelan, Rich Martin and Austin Martin. Richmond Country Club donated a free round of golf for four and they each received a $25 gift certificate to the Red Bird. Tammy Tyler of Tyler Electrical, the sole woman golfer in this tournament, won prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin. Mark Gentile won the men’s closest to the pin and Dave Casperson won the longest drive. Chris Robb won the 50/50 raffle.
