LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Thanks for the Mary D. Fund
To the Editor,
Over the past year, the Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMI) has received support from the Mary D. Fund. In the fall of 2022, BIMI brought baby sharks into Laurie McTeague’s first grade classroom. While in the classroom the sharks inspired the students’ writing and the students helped care for the sharks. In recognition of their efforts, the Mary D. Fund gave
each of the students a BIMI shark. It was not obvious who was happier, the students or Marguerite Donnelly, who had the opportunity to give the sharks away.
Recently, on July 2, BIMI was able to show off its new all-terrain wheelchair, which was also provided by the generosity shown by the Mary D. Fund. Both BIMI and the Mary D. Fund are thrilled that our programs have greater accessibility for individuals with limited mobility both while onsite at BIMI or when we are out exploring the island.
In the future, the Mary D. Fund hopes to continue supporting BIMI with increased outreach for the students of Block Island.
