Community Standard

To the Editor,
A number of years ago I was associated with the National Coalition Against Pornography. This grassroots organization made tremendous strides towards reducing or eliminating sordid sex establishments in small towns around the country. Strip clubs, massage parlors, and adult bookstores disappeared in communities that they assisted. The clear and consistent message they promoted was this:
The local community sets the standard for what is acceptable where they live.
I don’t pretend to understand the legal complexities involved in holding local establishments accountable for the responsible service of their patrons. I do know that in recent days our community has spoken clearly. I hope that our Town Council has heard the corporate voice of Block Island residents, and will take whatever definitive action they can to uphold the safety, security, and reputation of our beautiful island community.
