Queer Block Island holds second annual Pride weekend

Fri, 09/09/2022 - 3:45pm

Block Island is gearing up to celebrate its second annual Pride weekend September 15 to 18, with a fun itinerary organized by Queer Block Island. During the weekend, you can expect to witness killer drag performances,
bumping dance parties, educational events, and a festive pride march! The concept for Block Island Pride was created in 2020 with support from several volunteers and local businesses during the pandemic.
In recent decades, as LGBTQ+ people have gained more representation, visibility, and rights LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations remain a powerful community-building tool. Prides commemorate the events that transpired during the Stonewall Riots in New York City’s Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969. The Stonewall Riots are regarded as the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement which has improved access to adoption, marriage, and
healthcare for families across the globe.
Urban centers like Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City have been faster to adopt diversity, equity, and inclusivity into the fabric of their communities than their rural counterparts. This disparity has deterred many people in rural areas from coming out and exploring their sexual and gender expressions. Although there is a national effort to celebrate Pride during the month of June, many communities may host celebrations at any time during the year for various reasons.
The mission of Block Island Pride is to remind people that “All Are Welcome” to live and visit the island. The Pride Planning Committee asks all island businesses, residents, and visitors to decorate in support of the island’s LGBTQ+ people on September 12, and to keep your decorations hanging until the end of our festivities.
